Sailing

The Sand Hollow Yacht Club also known as Hobie Fleet 941 of the Hobie Class Association of North America meets often at Sand Hollow State Park to do what they love most, which is sailing.

The Sand Hollow Yacht Club promotes the sport of sailing in a family friendly atmosphere where they teach the art and sport of sailing to youth and adults alike.

They meet, socialize, and prepare for the annual Sand Hollow Sailing Classic, which is a racing competition featuring some of the top sailors in the nation. This year the Sand Hollow Classic will be held May 16th & 17th 2015 at Sand Hollow.

Everybody I met in The Sand Hollow Yacht Club was very friendly and helpful.

Raul Hevia started the group several years ago and lives in Dixie Springs just down the street from Sand Hollow State Park so he and his family can go sailing as much as possible. They love the freedom you experience when sailing.

Chuck Saling loves sailing. At 72 years of age, he is in peak condition and is the treasurer of the Sand Hollow Yacht Club/Hobie Fleet 941

Hal Stead a local musician and a skipper taught me so much about sailing. Hal says Sand Hollow is the best lake in the area for sailing because it has the sand beaches instead of rocky shorelines. The sandy beach is necessary for beaching the boats.

This was my first sailing experience and I was surprised at how fast you can get going. It was a perfect day at the lake with mostly light winds. We did get a little micro burst of wind started to lean in one direction and for a second I was a little nervous that we might tip, but we got things under control and we were able to enjoy a nice day of sailing on the lake. With beautiful views of Zion National Park, Pine Valley Mountain, and Sand Hollow you couldn’t ask for a more perfect day. Sailing would make a great date with just the right blend of relaxation and excitement.
