Description: Pioneer Park, also known as Dixie Rock, The Red Hill, and the Sugarloaf is a community park. Pioneer Park is a rock climber’s paradise. If you love bouldering and want to work on your rock climbing technique this is the place that many locals practice. Pioneer Park also features views of downtown, Zion National Park and Arizona. Many locals will take engagement or Bridal pictures at this location. Pioneer park also features A large pavilion, two barbecue and fire pits, several picnic areas with tables, an amphitheater, numerous hiking trails, a Boy Scout Cave, historical pioneer cabin location, slot canyons and a connection into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.
Many locals will talk about “The St. George Ocean” if you don’t know what the St. George Ocean is; it is simply being on top of the Dixie Rock (aka the Sugarloaf) at night time, you lay down flat on your back and raise your head to look towards the red flashing lights towards Bloomington hills area. At night time the sky has the appearance of “the ocean” and the city lights are “the stars” so everything is upside down. Since you are laying down on your back, using your imagination, looking at the stars and the beautiful panoramic views ,many locals have used this as location as an excuse to sneak in that first kiss.
Pioneer Park is also the location of “The St. George Narrow’s” or “The crack” it’s a small slot canyon and there is a small cave as well. Local legends state that the gravity pull of the moon will cause the crack to get smaller and tighter at night time so be careful!
There is also near by walking and biking trails and a water tower that you can climb up that has great views of St. George.
