Description: About 15 miles northwest of St. George is the town of Gunlock. Gunlock has a reservoir which is a state park, at times the water overflows and just below the dam some amazing waterfalls seasonally form. This is a popular place to hike and sometimes you can jump into water holes. Just outside of Gunlock there is the
Camelback Trail & The Cowboy Pools
This hike has some very unique rock formations. Some rocks almost resemble lizard like scales. The hills make a formation that resembles the two humps of a camel and there are some unique holes at the top of the mountain that are almost volcanic like but they are not volcanic. Rainfall gathers in these holes and sometimes form small pools hence the nickname “The Cowboy Pools”
Be careful coming down the ridge it is steep. Do some looking around and pick the safest not the shortest path.
Directions: Take your first right after Gunlock reservoir toward lower sand cove. Just about 3800 feet past lower sand cove. Just after the turn off from sand cove you can park off the side of the road and there is a trail that goes toward the camelback trail.
Cost: Camelback Trail/Cowboypool/ Sandcove is FREE.
If you go to the reservoir there is the cost for using the state park.
